thrifty chick

In these times of economic turmoil I really do have to pat myself on my back and say GOOD JOB CHICK!! for sticking to my 'needs only' budget. One thing I decided when I lost my job a few years back was to do away with paper products... errr not toilet paper, but paper towels and napkins. So a chick is trying to save money AND be green. I buy in bulk. Like my cat for a long time enjoyed the Sam's Club Cat food. Now she turns her nose up... but I had her fooled for a while. I go to the library for books, and I joined freecyle to get and give away stuff. And just today instead of paying 3 bucks for an iced coffee, I came back to the office and made my own free iced coffee. All coffee tastes good with 5 splenda's and 3 creams!!

There are however a few indulgences that I just have to have, Caribou Coffee, Miss Shirley's and wine (no link for wine LOL).

I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon Caribou Coffee and specifically Mocha Java blend. What I do know is that for years doing the DC commute I totally found it necessary to indulge in some caffeinated form of beverage. At Union Station there was Cookie Cafe, Au Bon Pain, and Buck's County. Well there were more, but these were my usual haunts. It was always a little too bitter, a little too strong, or too weak, never quite right. And of course I made my own. Had some Cafe du Monde with the chicory, and then your random Folgers and Maxwell House. But then one day my eyes were open!! I really wish I had a better story, but probably being anti-Starbucks led me there. People just FYI Starbucks is not the end all be all in the coffee world. Now I do on occasion have a caramel frappucino, but waiting for a pumpkin latte in Phoenix Airport made me miss my flight home. I have been mad at Starbucks since that fateful day. For me Caribou Mocha Java just has the right blend of dark roastyness with a hint of chocolate and it just fits! Now though, being thrifty I only buy it when it's on some type of sale which is usually 2 for twenty. Back at Thanksgiving I bought 4 bags that lasted almost right up until the Father's Day sale they had which has led me right up to the current sale they are having now 2 for 20... (a little pluggeration which I really wish I was being paid for).

Miss Shirley's ***ahhhh**** I mean what can I say!?!? I think I have always been a fan of breakfast food in general. Who can mess up eggs, bacon, and pancakes?? PLENTY of restaurants I'll tell you that. They use poor ingredients or the chefs/cooks do not have a love for the craft so what you get on the plate is non crisp bacon, runny eggs, and just nasty pancakes with sub par syrup. I will say there are some pretty good breakfast spots out there. Courtney's in Charlotte (which may be closed). They had these potatoes that were soooo good. Plum's Cafe in Orange County, CA. I do have a story behind this one.... I was working in Orange County and I had been IHOP'd out. I asked the concierge where a close diner was, and I guess being from the East Coast I knew exactly what I meant, but she was from Cali and she thought I meant Johnny Rockets. After I explained that I needed a place for breakfast she gave me the map to Plum's Cafe. Now this place is in the most unassuming strip mall. You would pass it if you didn't know it was there. So I get there and there was a wait, however, I was offered a mimosa immediately. ALWAYS a good sign. So I finally sit down and order bacon and eggs and toast and potatoes, BUT WHAT I GOT were rosemary infused potatoes, applewood smoked bacon with the peppered edges, and multi grain toast with raspberry jelly. I need to make a trip there just for that!! It was pure heaven! As you can see, I take my breakfast foods very seriously so when I read an article in Urbanite that described Miss Shirley's I knew I had to go. Now being the pack rat chick that I am, I ripped the article out of the magazine and held onto it for a few months before I actually went. But now I 'can't stop going. And although my money is alot tighter now than it has ever been, I try and fit it in at least once a month (or talk about it enough that my friends take pity on me and take me LOL). Many times I go by myself and just enjoy. Just this past Sunday i got the cinnamon danish pancakes and the Miss Shirley's Sampler. I eeeewww'd and ooooohh'd so much the ladies sitting next to me had to stop and stare at what it was I was eating. Several times as a plate of food passes by with a delicious smell and if the table it went to is anywhere near me, I ask what it is they are eating. I 'found' the crab cristo that way. Ok I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Last, but certainly not least, at all times there must be some form of wine in my house. Wine is so very necessary. I really do not like to spend over 20 bucks (and that's on a very good day) on any 1 bottle of wine. I mean come on, I like what I like but I tend to err on the side of inexpensivesivity for wine. I like my Boordy Liganoire , and Elk Run, Maryland wines I try to support oh and this NEW one I just found St. Micheal's. They have this wine called Golly Wobbler, with a name like that!?!? GRAPEY GOOD!! But I am not immune to buying a box (yes a BOX, it's economical and preserves the freshness) of Corbett Canyon chardonnay, or the big jumbo bottle of Sutter Home white zinfandel, or white merlot (for sangria of course). My reserves are a little limited now but trust and believe I will carve out 15 bucks for some wine when the need arises!

For some it's clothes or shoes, or for that matter, kitchen gadgets I do still watch QVC and HSN it just has to be a heck of an item for me get. I mean I REALLY want the Temptation dinnerware in cranberry, but I don't need it.

got me working working DAY AND NIGHT!!

literally... I am sitting here with my coffee. I took vitamins this morning cause who can afford to get sick right now. But I just can't get it together. Last night was the first night I made it to bed before 2AM. A chick is tired!!

I did a Greek wedding Saturday (a chick has 50eleven jobs) and it lived up to whatever stereo types or truths the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding established. I went to see that movie with my girlfriend and we sat there and cried about how we couldn't wait for our day to come. Neither of us has had a big fat ANY kinda wedding but it is nice to still hope that our prince charmings are out there. Ok so the wedding. So me and one of the other bartenders watched in amazement as the people showered the bride with money. They made it rain and then some!! SO much money was spent on this wedding I just pray they stay together. The only thing I did not appreciate were the pretty men whose eyebrows and manicures were better than mine. They were manly men... the one guy looked like he was about to burst out of his shirt, but they were also VERY metro-sexual. The women were ultra femine though, so it all evened out. And I was called babe probably more times than I care to admit. They OPA'd until about 2am. At one point the groom made everyone within 10 ft do shots of Metaxa which is this Greek brandy. I got some last year when I was in Greece (oh yes the chick travels) although I always mix it with something. One of the unfortunate women who was forced to take the shot said 'I'm Italian we don't do this shit at our weddings!!' It was all in fun though and she drowned several glasses of water and Pepsi. I was actually a pretty fun wedding. I have done so many that are sooooooo boring, but not this one.

My mom celebrated her 50 yr High School Reunion. If you're still alive after 50 yrs after graduating from High School YOU SHOULD go to your reunion. She said it was awesome!! I still can't believe I will be out of High School for 20 yrs next year. Damn I feel so under accomplished... I mean comparing myself to... well I know I shouldn't compare. I've done more than some and less than others. And for whatever reason 40 is my magical age. Like if I haven't done it by then, then I can just go ahead and shrivel up and die LOL. I have 3 1/2 more years to go :/ OH yeah one of the few black guests at the wedding was also getting married he said he was 40 and his fiance was 39 so they were going to have a huge wedding party. I guess I should set my sights higher than just successful dates. I should say out loud and to the world I want to get married and have some kids. But who really admits that these days!?!?

This is a slight homage to Michael Jackson who was VERY accomplished but still had so many demons. See here I go again comparing. I always wanted to be part of a sibling singing group or at least family. But I guess that would require the siblings and/or said family to have some iota of talent which we do, just not in the singing arena. My sister sometimes can't find the right key to save her life. And I can carry a note but usually not the right one.

montana and fantasia

i was trying not to have a comment on these 2 subjects but I really REALLY do.

Let's start with Montana Fishburne aka Chippy D. Now you know my ignorant butt had to go see the porn that she just HAD to do in order to start her career. All I have to say is EWWWWWWWW!! It's not even good porn. It's a rap video for who ever that dude was and it was just a mess. I didn't, rather I couldn't watch the whole thing... I had to fast forward through most of it. It was just so bad. And I am not a porn aficionado, but COME ON!! This young fool is in the kinda porn that is like the last resort. Like your rent has to be paid or the sheriff is coming. I guess this industry is not really glamorous but could someone have done her make-up? And would it have been to much for her to get her nails done? And her butt... one blogger referred to her as Cheetah booty. 19 with bad skin in ya butt?!?! I had to take a mirror and look at my own bootay this morning. I mean I have eczema but not lesions like that. She just looked beat up.

At 19 the worse thing... if you can even compare... I did was my one and only tattoo. And my rationale was dumb, I can admit that now. I had a car and my dorm mates needed a ride to the tattoo dudes house, so one time when I was taking them I got one myself. My dad nearly passed out when I came home and showed him. He literally had to hold onto the kitchen counter he was so shocked LMAO!! And that's when I felt kinda bad. I mean there wasn't anything I could do at that point. It was a done deal. But my tat is strategically placed. You only see it if I want you to see it. And my dad was a mailman. No one was reporting on me and my tat, nor did I shame the family. I just think this little girl did not think it through and I sincerely hope as she matures and grows wiser that this was not the best move to make.

Now on to Miss Fantasia ***LOUD ASS SIGH*** REALLY?!?!? You have a beautiful little girl, a singing career, you were on Broadway, Oprah likes you (that in and of itself is a measure of success)and you have a family that needs you!! To a certain extent I will buy that she didn't know he was married and/or separated, but as a woman, YOU KNOW!! Things don't just add up and you always have a gut feeling that something just aint right. But to attempt to take your life because?!?!? Well she said a lot in her interview with Robin Roberts and the tipping point I suppose was the man. My mantra is you always have a choice. ALWAYS!! And when you think things can't get any better, they really do.

Now I thought I had had my mind made up about her until I saw this interview. I am one of those people who actually voted for her (well her and Jennifer Hudson... I was torn that season) on American Idol. She was AMAZING on Broadway. But this little girl is just confused and just needed to take a step back to see what she had was going through and what she had done. I wasn't going to buy that new CD but I now I most certainly am!!

We all make mistakes or decisions that we regret or have consequences that may follow us for a long time in life. It happens. That's life. I truly do wish the best for both of these young ladies!

monday...

ok so some of my best ideas come to me while I'm driving and then I sit down to write it and I just draw a complete blank____________!!

Adventures at Chic-Fil-A
I went to Chic Fil A today. It is truly one of my favorite fast food spots. And I still am trying to figure out if it is because the food is good (the peanut oil does make a difference I think) OR the fact that they believe in great customer service. I love the 'Does that complete your order?' question when you go through the drive thru instead of the 'Is that it?' from every other fast food joint. OH and the 'My Pleasure' when you say thank you or whatever. I just love it!

So I'm there today mainly to get myself out of the self inflicted funk I put myself in and because I have some extra cash from my tips from last week. A chick knows how to hold onto 20 buck for a good long time!! It's lunch time so you have your usual suspects, office workers, mother's with kids, senior citizens, and everything in between. I sat inside and people watched the folks outside. One family in particular had a mother and 3 boys with ultra blond hair. I watched the mother just be oblivious to the kids. The little one may have been 3 or 4 dropped his nugget and proceeded to go pick it up and eat it off the ground. Now I'm all for the 5 second rule but the outside ground I think has a different set of rules. Then the father, or at least some man that appeared to be the dad, comes up and the boys are sooo happy to see him. SO the mom and dad are talking and the kids are just doing there thing. I guess i always focus in on the youngest because I am the youngest. He has his nugget sauce and is liking the hell out of it. It had to have been sweet cause my boy liked that thing dry. And neither the mother nor the father said anything... matter of fact they probably didn't even see him. Which is kind of sad.

WTF!?!?!
Said not spelled out. Kind of like Things that make you go hmmmmm...
1. Fitted shirts. Not really a fashion statement if you have belly and back fat; on men OR women. It's just a bad look!! Muffin tops are just never acceptable. I say this knowing I myself have to purchase tops (being the chesty chick that I am)in my size or higher. And you men, just cause you wearing the Under Armour gear does not mean you look like Ray Ray. Let me note here that I got distracted by the thought of sexy NFL players who do in fact wear Under Armour and do it justice. NFL Hotties as a google search unfortunately brought up alot of scantily clad women which must mean that this is what the sexy NFL player likes?? Hmm I don't know. and being the Steeler fan that I am Hines Ward could most DEF rock some Under Armour. AND coach Mike Tomlinson. And as much as I love The Bus, Jerome Bettis might need to pass on wearing a fitted shirt.

2. Bonnets and sleepwear. I understand not doing your hair, really I do. But a bonnet?!? Really your lazy ass is leaving the house to do whatever it is you gotta do in a bonnet? And I guess I was getting used to the black ones but PURPLE!? REALLY your countrified bama butt is leaving the house so EVERYBODY can see you in a purple or pink bonnet? And sleepwear is just a big NO!! If you can't find a pair of pants to put on to go walk around in, then you need to keep that bootay indoors!! Is it for attention? Did you not get enough hugs as a kid? I just don't get it. And I'm not talking about keeping up with none of the Joneses just regular common sense here! Oprah call this being a shlumpadinka! Here's my PSA to all: DON'T BE A SHLUMPADINKA!!

3. This Economy. It's getting better for some, I'll even venture to say MOST... just for some reason not me and alot of my friends. I am positive and I am keeping my head up but some days I'm like WHY ME!?!?! I'm still trying to understand the lesson in all of this hoping that I at least serve as a cautionary tale. Well maybe not that, I mean except for in good times leaving absolutely good jobs for reasons I question now, I really haven't done things too wrong. Right now I know my resume must read like I'm grossly overqualified. I'm not saying that as a pat on my own back, I've done alot in my years here on earth except figure out what I really want to do when I grow up, which is kinda sad.

4. Workplace bullying. There was a story on this morning news about a man who committed suicide because basically he was being bullied by his superior. My heart goes out to anyone in a situation who thinks they can not do anything about it. I mean granted the economy (see above) is the pits so maybe he thought he had to hold on to his job and take whatever he got from his asshole boss. The boss knew the dude was suffering from depression so how uncaring can you be to push someone further in a hole of despair. There has to be a special place in hell for him. My immediate reaction was to go find that bully boss and kick his ass. Some people need a good ass kicking and that bully boss tops my list. Now I sound like the bully, but I think the world would be a better place of certain people got their asses kicked when needed. FOR INSTANCE, (off the top of my head) Clarence Thomas, yes the supreme justice for saying affirmative action didn't really help him, AND for all the stuff you know he did/said to Anita Hill; Big from Sex in the City, prior to the 1st movie before he married Carrie who's dumb butt waited for him to finally come around; and speaking of sex... Ciara for being a hyper sexualized singer who is not really anyone to look up to. Come on ma really?!?

Parting thoughts/rants...
I am glad it is cool today. I can go finish mowing my jungle of a yard. Although as I sit here I really want to go home and get in the bed watch whatever is on the DVR and just chill. And I might just do that. I am hanging on by a thread here. The way my life has been going here lately, everything just seems so surreal. I will eventually get it together and things will get better because honestly, what other choice is there!!

Did you ever want to...

be in one of those games where you race to get a million dollars? I don't mean a TV game show but you know like in Midnight Madness or Rat Race ?? None of these are Oscar worthy movies. They had some people who won Oscars in other movies but not these 2. There was another one I think it had Sammy Davis Jr and Burt Reynolds (who was a 80's movie staple) and a whole lot of big named folks... well you know for the 80's. Kinda makes you wonder where are they now like the main dude in Midnight Madness was also the American Werewolf in London although I'm looking at his (David Naughton) IMDB profile and he is working so OH YEAH... race to win millions!!

That would be so cool. You get a letter in the mail that says meet me at the location at 1:15AM. And then you get there and you see people you know like your sister, hair dresser, deacon from the church, the trainer from the gym you had your eye on, all in a quest for something. They give you a car like a Porsche or Camaro (i know I KNOW 2 different cars... but I'm thinking sports models here) and a map; not a GPS but a map, so you do have to have some skills in that area. You have 24 hours or a week to find whatever it is you need to find or get to where ever you need to get to and then you win the million dollars. Now there would be obstacles like maybe the state troopers are tipped off that this gang of people will be doing this so their are speed traps every step of the way. Yeah I think that would be cool.

I don't know why I was thinking about this. I mean even for me this is pretty darn random!! And for some reason I was convinced Jeremy Piven was the main dude for the Meat Machine which was the green team (they had color teams) in Midnight Madness but it was a dude named Brian Wilkin I think. They were the jocks and everytime they went on the quest they would do this chant spelling out M E A T M A C H I N E then saying MEAT MACHINE 3 times or something like that. There were jock, nerds, sorority girls and then the loveable team who has the adorable kid (Michael J. Fox in this case). I know I remember specific stuff about movies but I have not seen this thing since at least the late 80's. The other thing I remember is one of the clues was at the Bonaventure Hotel which had these glass elevators. And when I went to Los Angeles (oh yeah that's where this movie took place, it was a race across the city) I stayed there with my mom and grandmother, so I had a connection. I went up in the elevators and wondered even then how it would be if I were in this race. From the beginning of the movie you knew who the 'good guys' were and that they were going to win but you still have to watch the whole movie just to see how it all ends up.

Rat Race was just a bad movie, well bad in a I'll-watch-it-on-a-rainy-day-and-NOTHING-else-is-on kinda way. It had Whoopi Goldberg (who should have won her Oscar for Color Purple), Cuba Gooding Jr (who really hasn't done anything good since Jerry MacGuire... well I mean if you consider his role in that good. He should have won an Oscar for his role in Men of Honor which I don't even think was nominated although I have some thoughts on the whole military/war movies that focus on black people... a blog on that later), and Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean, whatever happened to THAT show?!?!). They go to this hotel room and have to race across the country I guess to this location that has the million dollars in it. It was 2 person teams and different things happened to different people. Like Rowan Atkinson's character had a sleeping disorder so he would fall asleep and miss out on clues. That part was funny!! There was this team where one of the guys just got his tongue pierced and it started to swell and turn purple so he couldn't really talk. And Whoopi was in the race with her daughter and their story line was kind dumb. To be honest I can't remember if anyone got the million bucks in the end which kinda sucks. But there was a parade so maybe they shared it or something? No real loss if you don't see it.

I think I single handily upped the percentage of Midnight Madness on IMDB. Had to check some facts. I wan tot have a factual blog here!! Granted most of it I pulled right out my ass but you know some things should be accurate!!

next blog...

It probably would help if I remembered my password everytime I come in here. But I have had to reset 2 times already. Just a testament to how random I can be. But actually what's not random are my passwords. Since every site needs a password and/or a site key and/or the catchpa thingy my passwords are pretty much the same and I just keep recycling them and add a 1 or 2 or a capital letter here and there.

So the reason for today's blog kiddies is the NEXT BLOG>> button. I love love LOVE that thing. Look it's right at the top next to the Follow Share Report Abuse links. You never know what you're gonna get. Kinda like Forrest Gump and the whole box of chocolates. One of my favorite artist's Eric Roberson does alot of video blogs which I guess is easier than the typing ones. And then I guess technology makes it easier to do stuff like that because they have those little flip camcorders that I saw just this morning on HSN for the low low price of $79.90... i am digressing (a normal occurance). OK back to the blog. The next blog when I clicked this morning from my blog lead me to something about Laundry Mats which was slighty weird. And then it got me to wondering how many times people click on my site from the next blog>> and how random that function really is. There is somewhat a method to the madness like because Eric Roberson is an musical artist the next site is usually music related. Or if someone is an painter the next site is usually related in that way. I just wonder how 'it' decides what is next!?? I sometimes just keep hitting the button to see what's next.

There are a few things to this feature:
1. Sometimes you may click on it and it takes you to a foreign language (like this one). This makes me feel very small in that this whole BLOG thing is a global dynamic. And then back to the whole existential nature of things where one thing you do has an effect on the entire universe. Or at least that's how I always remembered the theory from Mrs. Parshall's English class, I think 10th grade.

2. If you like the site, it may be hard to go find it again on some rainy afternoon when you think hey remember that blog I went on 3 weeks ago?!? And I guess you could bookmark it. You could have a whole blog bookmark section on your computer. If that's what you do, do you!!

3. Having 3 points is always a good round number for having points but I can't remember what my 3rd point was... so If I remember before I hit post I'll include it. Other wise point 3 will just be random ramblings.

So ends my random thought for today. Come back tomorrow (or maybe even later today should the mood hit me) for a new fresh random topic!!

chickiness...

I should have posts everyday cause i have random thoughts everyday. Actually more than one.

This is my nativity scene. I jacked it from my jobs Christmas in July. The reason, it's Little Baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes man!! Something about a baby that just brings about hope. And who better than Jesus. And I need hope right now. That and then some.

I am sitting here now ready to go. IT'S FRIDAY!!! One of my supervisors brought in some lunch so late in the day that smells awesome. And I had spaghetti but a Chick is hungry again and I forgot my snacks at home and I got a buck and some random change in my wallet so a snack purchase is out of the question. I could go down and get some free popcorn and some soda, but I kinda want a meal right about now. Yep i gotta go get some of that popping corn...
